Materials you’ll need:
- IKEA KNAGGLIG wooden crate
- PlastiKote Chalk Colours
- PlastiKote Primer
- Sandpaper (fine-grit)
- Water & cloths (to clean the surface)
- Masking cloth or tarpaulin (it is best to spray outdoors)
- Painter’s tape and old newspapers
Step-by-Step Guide to upcycling your wooden crate
1. Prepare your work area
Choose a well-ventilated area, e.g. an outdoor area or garage, and lay out a drop cloth to catch any paint splashes. In this way, you can ensure a smooth process and protect your surroundings from paint mist.
2. Sand the wooden crate
Lightly sand all surfaces of the crate to remove any rough spots and make the wood more receptive to the paint.
3. Clean the wooden crate
After sanding, wipe the crate with a clean cloth to remove dust and residue. If you use a damp cloth, be sure to let the crate dry completely before continuing. Just make sure that the surface is clean, dry and free of grease.
4. Apply PlastiKote Primer
Priming the crate is important to obtain a smooth, durable surface. And by applying the primer, the wood does not absorb as much paint and the colour result is better. First shake the Primer can well and then spray on an even coat, holding the can about 25 to 30 centimetres away from the crate. Apply the primer in several thin coats, always spraying evenly and in a criss-cross pattern. Allow the Primer to dry according to the instructions on the can before proceeding to the next step.
5. Choose your design and colours
PlastiKote Chalk Colours comes with ten different chalk shades so you can let your creativity run wild. You can use a single colour or mix and match several colours to create a unique look. With painter's tape you can create geometric shapes, stripes or other designs if you are aiming for a specific pattern.
6. Spray paint the crate
The aerosol should be at room temperature. Best processing temperature 10 to 25°C. Shake the spray can for 2 minutes before use and spray a sample. Hold the spray can about 25 to 30 centimetres away from the crate and start applying the paint in thin, even layers. Move back and forth and do not stand in one place for too long to avoid drips. Apply several thin coats (and keep shaking the spray can in between) and allow each coat to dry for a few minutes until you have achieved full coverage.
7. Let It Dry and Cure
Allow your crate to dry completely after the final coat of paint. For the best results, let the crate cure for at least 24 hours before handling or placing items inside. This curing time ensures the paint is fully set and provides a durable, chip-resistant finish.
Tip: If the surface is subject to a lot of wear and tear, we recommend applying a clear sealer.
